On Saturday September 16, 2006, the Sandia Ranger District - Cibola National Forest and the Friends of Tijeras Pueblo presented Master Flintknapper, Luther Rivera and his instructional flintknapping workshop.
Luther has been practicing this technique for over 20 years and teaching it for over 8 years. Thirteen students attended this great workshop and spent their day under the ramada, enjoying the sun and breeze while doing their very best to work stone into tools. Age requirement for this event was 16 years or older.
Each student paid a $30.00 fee for this workshop, which included the use of a tool kit, and all materials. Many of those attending the workshop purchased a flintknapping tool kit from Luther. The kits are put together for those starting out in the craft and were great for $20.00. Luther was even kind enough to let folks take some materials home to work on.
All fees benefit the Tijeras Pueblo Adobe Project. Interested in an event like this? Call Sandia Ranger District at 281-3304.
